Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by dust storms and strong winds on Monday, causing disruptions to Metro and local train services.
The weather event occurred shortly after the India Meteorological Department's prediction of thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to intense rainfall for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.
The forecast warned of gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph in isolated areas of Mumbai for the next four hours, urging residents to exercise caution.
Rainfall with strong winds affected various suburbs of Mumbai, including Dadar, Kurla, Mahim, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Vikhroli, while some parts of south Mumbai experienced drizzles.
In Ghatkopar, at least seven individuals sustained injuries after an iron hoarding collapsed during the rain and strong winds. The incident occurred at the Police Ground petrol pump along the Eastern Express Highway in Pantnagar.
Emergency responders initiated a search and rescue operation as some individuals were feared trapped under the collapsed hoarding.
Additionally, an electric pole fell on the road near Belapur Savita Chemical on Thane-Belapur Road due to the storm.
Videos circulating from various areas of Mumbai, including Goregaon, depicted reduced visibility caused by the adverse weather conditions.
Metro services were disrupted between Aarey and Andheri East metro stations after a banner fell onto the overhead wire due to strong winds, according to a spokesperson from Metro Rail.
Similarly, suburban train services on Central Railway were impacted when an overhead equipment pole between Thane and Mulund stations became bent due to the strong winds.
As a result, suburban services on the Main Line were suspended, as confirmed by the chief spokesperson of Central Railway.
Furthermore, power outages were reported in Kalwa, Thane district, and other affected areas due to the adverse weather conditions.
