Heavy Rains Lash Chennai and Coastal Tamil Nadu; Schools and Colleges Closed in Several Districts
Persistent heavy rains in Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu lead to school and college closures and a yellow alert in multiple districts
13-11-2024Chennai and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu continue to experience heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to announce holidays for schools and colleges in multiple districts. Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal in Puducherry have closed both schools and colleges, while Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Perambalur have declared holidays specifically for schools.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert across several districts, forecasting isolated heavy rains in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Madurai. The alert comes as a low-pressure area develops over the Bay of Bengal, which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns could intensify rainfall across coastal Tamil Nadu through November 15.
IMD’s forecast predicts heavy rainfall across more than 15 districts for the week, with Chennai and nearby districts like Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur expecting over 10 cm of rain. Chennai’s skies are expected to remain mostly cloudy, with the potential for scattered rain and thunderstorms in the coming two days. As of now, the city has recorded 43 cm of rain since October, slightly above average for this period.
Coastal regions from Thiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, are preparing for rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, accompanied by winds reaching up to 55 kmph.
