12-08-2024A helicopter crash in the early hours of Monday morning claimed the life of the pilot and led to the evacuation of hundreds of guests from a hotel in Cairns, a popular tourist destination in northern Australia. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. local time when a twin-engine helicopter collided with the roof of the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel, sparking a fire and triggering an emergency response.
Queensland police confirmed that the pilot was killed on impact and forensic investigations are currently underway to formally identify him. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the hotel guests or staff on the ground.
The crash, which took place in Cairns—a key gateway to the Great Barrier Reef—resulted in two of the helicopter's rotor blades detaching, with one reportedly landing in the hotel’s swimming pool.
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and the forensic crash unit, in coordination with Australia's transport safety authorities, will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
