Hemant Soren Resigns as Jharkhand CM, Staked Claim for Second Term
Hemant Soren tendered his resignation and staked a claim to form the government in Jharkhand after his JMM-led alliance's historic election victory
24-11-2024Hemant Soren, the executive president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), resigned as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Sunday and staked his claim to form the government after leading his alliance to a remarkable victory in the state elections.
Soren submitted his resignation letter to Governor Santosh Gangwar and presented a support letter from his alliance partners, marking the beginning of his second consecutive term in office. Speaking to the media after his meeting with the governor, Soren confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony would take place on November 28.
The JMM-led alliance, which includes the Congress, RJD, and Left parties, won 56 seats in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, overcoming predictions of a BJP-led NDA victory. Despite a vigorous campaign by the BJP, which secured only 21 seats with its allies gaining three, the alliance surpassed the majority mark of 41.
This victory marks a historic achievement as it is the first time an incumbent government in Jharkhand has been re-elected for a second consecutive term since the state's creation in 2000. Soren is set to be sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
