High Alert in Delhi as Tensions With Pakistan Mount; Govt Cancels Staff Leave, Boosts Security
Amid escalating cross-border conflict, Delhi is on high alert with government staff recalled and citywide security stepped up
09-05-2025A state of high alert has been declared in the national capital amid rising hostilities between India and Pakistan, prompting authorities to cancel all leaves for Delhi government employees and ramp up emergency preparedness measures.
As cross-border shelling continues in regions like Jammu, the city’s administrative machinery is stepping up vigilance. District magistrates have begun holding readiness assessments with their teams, reviewing health infrastructure and disaster response capabilities.
Delhi Police have stepped up surveillance across the city, particularly in sensitive locations, with intensified night patrols and increased deployment of personnel. A senior police official confirmed that extra forces are being stationed in high-risk zones and that round-the-clock monitoring is in place.
In a directive issued late Thursday evening, the Delhi government’s services department announced an indefinite suspension of leaves for all employees to ensure the capital’s readiness for any eventuality.
District-level reviews are underway, with officials focusing on identifying gaps in rapid response systems and coordinating between departments. In East Delhi, authorities are conducting detailed assessments to reinforce emergency protocols.
Security presence has been heightened at major transit points and public spaces. Paramilitary units and Delhi Police have been deployed at metro stations, markets, airports, residential areas, and hotels. Special commissioners across the capital’s 15 police districts are holding continuous meetings with their deputy commissioners to coordinate efforts.
This heightened alert follows an attempted offensive by Pakistan targeting several Indian cities, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, and Amritsar. Indian forces thwarted the attack, taking down Pakistani fighter jets and a defense system near Lahore.
“All district DCPs are actively overseeing law and order. Field-level officers, including ACPs and SHOs, have been fully briefed and are working under close supervision,” a police source said.
As part of counter-terror initiatives, security inspections are being conducted at key installations. DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania stated that a full security audit was carried out at Mayur Vihar Phase-1 Metro Station, including a review of CCTV coverage and coordination with CISF personnel. The station has 41 surveillance cameras and is manned by a dedicated team in each shift.
Meanwhile, Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) have been deployed across the city. “Our teams conducted extensive anti-sabotage drills at malls, hotels, and other sensitive locations to strengthen our security posture,” said DCP (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary.
Tight checks are also being carried out at all entry points to the city, with thorough screening of vehicles entering Delhi.
