Historic Two-Day Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra Kicks Off in Puri
President Droupadi Murmu and lakhs of devotees witness the unprecedented two-day Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, amid heightened security
07-07-2024In a historic turn of events, the annual Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra began in Puri, Odisha, on Sunday, extending to a two-day celebration for the first time since 1971. President Droupadi Murmu joined the throngs of devotees for the auspicious occasion, while the Odisha government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, ensured special arrangements for her visit.
This year, due to celestial configurations, the typically one-day Rath Yatra has been extended to two days. The festival, a major Hindu event, honors Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Devotees pull grand chariots carrying the idols of Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister Goddess Subhadra through the streets, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, covering approximately 3 kilometers.
In a deviation from tradition, certain rituals will be completed in a single day. These include 'Nabajouban Darshan' and 'Netra Utsav', which are usually conducted before the Rath Yatra. 'Nabajouban Darshan' signifies the youthful reappearance of the deities after being in 'Anasara' (quarantine) for 15 days post 'Snana Purnima'. According to lore, the deities fall ill after excessive bathing on 'Snana Purnima', necessitating this period of seclusion. Prior to their reappearance, priests perform 'Netra Utsav', where the deities' eyeballs are freshly painted.
Elaborate Security for Rath Yatra
The Odisha government has implemented extensive measures to ensure the smooth progression of the festival. Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain assured that all rituals are proceeding as planned with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra reported that 180 platoons of security personnel from both state and central forces have been deployed to maintain order and manage the large crowds.
According to ADG (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar, AI-powered CCTV cameras have been installed at the festival site and other strategic locations to enhance security. Special arrangements have been made for President Murmu's visit, including a VIP zone for dignitaries such as the Odisha Governor, Chief Minister, and Union Ministers, and a buffer zone for the President.
With an anticipated attendance of 10 to 15 lakh people, the fire service department has prepared thoroughly. DG Fire Service, Sudhanshu Sarangi, mentioned that 46 modern fire tenders have been stationed throughout the town and along the sea beach to ensure safety during the Rath Yatra.
