ICC Cracks Down After Heated India–Pakistan Asia Cup Clashes: Rauf Banned, Suryakumar Fined for Misconduct

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a series of disciplinary actions after reviewing on-field incidents from the high-voltage India–Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 matches. Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has been handed a two-game suspension, while Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav was fined 30 percent of his match fees and given two demerit points for misconduct.

The ICC’s Elite Panel of Match Referees conducted formal hearings for the fixtures held on September 14, 21, and 28, addressing several breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct stemming from provocative gestures and unsporting behavior.

Suryakumar was found guilty of violating Article 2.21, which covers actions that “bring the game into disrepute,” following his refusal to shake hands with Pakistan players after India’s win and for making remarks deemed politically sensitive.

Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan was also reprimanded under the same article for his celebratory “gun gesture” after scoring a half-century in the Super 4 match. He received an official warning and one demerit point.

Haris Rauf, who drew attention for his “6-0” taunt and airplane-style gesture aimed at Indian supporters, was found guilty twice during the tournament. His actions—widely circulated on social media—were interpreted as provocative, leading to fines and four cumulative demerit points.

In contrast, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh was cleared of wrongdoing after being accused of making an obscene gesture following India’s Super 4 win. The ICC found no evidence of a violation under Article 2.6, which pertains to offensive or insulting gestures.

During the final on September 28, Jasprit Bumrah admitted to a charge under Article 2.21 after imitating Rauf’s airplane motion upon dismissing him. Bumrah accepted an official warning and one demerit point without a formal hearing.

The series of rulings highlights the intense emotions that often accompany the India–Pakistan cricket rivalry, with the ICC reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance toward conduct that crosses the line of sportsmanship.
