The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is gearing up to deliver one of its most expansive and culturally diverse editions yet — a true convergence of global cinema and creative talent. This year’s festival will present more than 240 films representing 81 nations, including 13 world premieres, four international premieres, and 46 Asian premieres. The selection comes from an impressive pool of over 2,300 entries submitted by filmmakers across 127 countries.

A notable highlight of this year’s edition is the strong representation of women in filmmaking. Over 50 films helmed by female directors are set to screen, reflecting IFFI’s ongoing emphasis on diversity, equal representation, and artistic vision.

The festival will also honour superstar Rajinikanth, celebrating his extraordinary five decades in cinema — a milestone that has sparked widespread international attention.

Adding a significant diplomatic and cultural milestone to the festival, South African actor, producer, and cultural figure Tarina Patel has been named to the IFFI 2025 Advisory Council and Steering Committee. Patel’s appointment recognises her long-standing work in fostering cultural and cinematic collaboration between India and South Africa.

This year’s Steering Committee brings together an elite roster of global filmmakers and industry figures, including acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur and Academy Award-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor.

Speaking about the honour, Patel said,
“As someone with deep roots in both South Africa and India, serving on this committee is incredibly meaningful. It’s a privilege to help shape the festival and strengthen the creative conversation between our countries.”

Patel, who was recently honoured as the Cross-Cultural Ambassador between both nations, will now play a key role in advancing a landmark co-production agreement between India and South Africa — a move expected to open new pathways for collaborative filmmaking, talent exchange, and joint funding models.

She is also working on a biographical feature film based on the life of an overlooked South African golf talent of Indian origin, who was denied his rightful opportunities during apartheid. The project aims to serve as both a cultural statement and a symbolic foundation for the emerging Indo–South African co-production framework.

“This story embodies resilience and representation — the very spirit of collaboration I hope this treaty will encourage,” Patel said.
“It feels deeply personal and perfectly aligned with the role I now play at IFFI.”

For Patel — and for many participating creators — this year’s festival represents more than a cinematic celebration. It is a platform for cultural diplomacy, shared storytelling, and global creative exchange.

IFFI 2025 will take place in Goa from November 20 to 28, promising a festival rich with artistic excellence, global participation, and groundbreaking partnerships.
