IIM Professor Defends Navya Nanda's Admission as Fully Merit-Based
Navya Naveli Nanda, granddaughter of Amitabh Bachchan, starts the Blended Post Graduate Programme (BPGP) at IIM Ahmedabad, facing scrutiny over her admission
03-09-2024Navya Naveli Nanda, granddaughter of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, has enrolled in the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad for its Blended Post Graduate Programme (BPGP) in MBA. The 26-year-old shared her excitement about the admission in an Instagram post on Sunday night, calling it a "dream come true."
Her announcement, however, faced significant criticism online. Some critics questioned the validity of the program, labeling it as not a “real MBA,” while others speculated that her admission might be influenced by her celebrity background or even suggest a quota system.
In response to the criticism, IIM Ahmedabad’s Associate Professor Promila Agarwal addressed the concerns on social media. She clarified that IIM Ahmedabad does not have quotas for its programs and that Nanda was admitted based on her merit, having met the required cut-offs and successfully completed the interview process. Agarwal emphasized that Nanda’s admission was justified by her impressive qualifications and the rigorous selection process for the BPGP.
Agarwal further defended Nanda against the criticism, noting that the BPGP's selection process, which includes an online test or valid CAT, GMAT, or GRE scores, followed by a personal interview, is as competitive as other IIM-A programs.
In her Instagram post, Navya shared photos with her new batchmates and expressed her enthusiasm for the journey ahead. She captioned the post, "Dreams do come true! Excited for the next 2 years with the best people and faculty! Blended Post Graduate Programme (BPGP) Class of 2026."
