The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for parts of Delhi, forecasting moderate rain and thunderstorms with gusty winds. This alert covers most areas of the national capital for the coming hours, advising residents to brace for possible disruptions due to the weather.

The IMD warns that heavy rain could lead to localized waterlogging and traffic delays across the city. Delays are already affecting arrivals and departures at Indira Gandhi International Airport, though no cancellations have been reported. Airlines are advising passengers to check for updates before traveling.

Heavy rain began in Delhi on Friday afternoon, with more showers expected as overcast skies persist. Central and southern Delhi have been particularly impacted. The weather department predicts that light to moderate rainfall will continue throughout the day. Rainfall on Thursday night caused waterlogging and traffic jams, with the minimum temperature dropping to 21.4°C, four degrees below the norm. Safdarjung, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded 29.6 mm of rain, while areas such as the Ridge, Delhi University, and Lodhi Road also saw significant precipitation.

Many roads in Delhi were submerged, leading to severe traffic disruptions. The Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to avoid waterlogged areas and use alternate routes. Major roads, including NH-48, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Outer Ring Road, and Rohtak Road, experienced heavy traffic congestion.

The IMD forecasts continued cloudy skies and light to moderate rain through the day, with a maximum temperature expected to reach 30°C.

In addition to Delhi, the IMD has issued warnings for very heavy rainfall in several states, including Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Mizoram, and Tripura. The department has highlighted a moderate to high risk of flash floods in Uttarakhand, particularly in Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi. Flash flood risks are also predicted for Shimla and Sirmaur districts in Himachal Pradesh.

West Bengal's South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Haora, Hugli, Nadia, and Bankura are under low to moderate flash flood risk. Similarly, Mizoram and Tripura’s districts, including Saiha, Lunglei, Serchhip, Champhai, Aizawl, Mamit, and Lawngtlai, are also at risk.

The IMD also warns of rough sea conditions over the north Bay of Bengal from September 13 to 15, advising fishermen to avoid these waters due to dangerous conditions.
