Imran Khan To Challenge FRRO Notice Ordering Him To Leave India By October 28
Actor Imran Khan will challenge the FRRO's order directing him to leave India by October 28 and a Mumbai Police summons linked to his participation in a protest
15-10-2026Actor Imran Khan will challenge the Foreigners Regional Registration Office's (FRRO) order directing him to leave India by October 28, along with a Mumbai Police summons linked to his participation in a recent protest.
His lawyer, Zulfiquar Memon, said on Thursday that the legal team was preparing a petition and would seek an urgent hearing after filing it in the coming days. The matter is likely to be heard by a Bombay High Court division bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna.
The FRRO issued a 'Leave India Notice' on Thursday, identifying the actor as Imran Khan Pal, a US national, and alleging violations of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. The notice directs him to leave the country by October 28 and warns that non-compliance could invite prosecution.
The order invokes provisions empowering the authorities to direct foreign nationals to leave India in specified circumstances.
Khan's lawyer has reportedly said that the actor holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card and argued that OCI cardholders are not prohibited from participating in protests.
The legal challenge comes after Khan was detained during a demonstration at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The protest called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation amid concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Khan was accompanied by his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. Mumbai Police detained all three during the gathering.
The actor later said he had attended as a Mumbai resident and not as a representative of any political party or organisation.
Police said August Kranti Maidan was not an authorised protest venue under a Bombay High Court order and that preventive action was necessary to maintain law and order.
Author Tushar Gandhi, who was also detained while travelling to the proposed protest site, was subsequently released.
BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya called for Khan's deportation, citing his reported US citizenship. He also urged the police to verify the actor's nationality and questioned his participation in a political demonstration.
Khan had spoken publicly about his American citizenship in a 2011 interview, when he said he hoped to obtain an Indian passport.
The actor has previously commented on public issues, including police action against students protesting alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in July.
His legal team is now preparing to challenge the FRRO notice and police summons. The outcome will depend on the proceedings before the appropriate court and the legal grounds raised by the actor.
