Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's congratulatory message on Monday, expressing India's readiness to collaborate with Canada on the basis of mutual understanding and respect for each other's concerns.
Trudeau's initial message, extending congratulations to PM Modi on his electoral victory, came on June 6 after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
However, PM Modi's response, which arrived four days later, raised eyebrows, especially considering his prompt replies to other world leaders' well-wishes.
The exchange occurs against a backdrop of strained relations between the two nations, stemming from Trudeau's remarks last year implicating India in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated.
In May, Canada announced the arrest of three individuals in connection with Nijjar's murder, months after Trudeau's insinuations. However, India has criticized Canada for failing to share pertinent evidence or information related to the case.
The discord between the two countries has centered on Canada's perceived tolerance of pro-Khalistani elements operating freely within its borders. India has cited instances of these elements posing threats to Indian diplomats, leading to diplomatic tensions and a reduction in Canada's diplomatic presence in India.
Despite these challenges, PM Modi's response to Trudeau's message indicates India's commitment to maintaining a constructive dialogue with Canada, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and respect in bilateral relations.
