The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Sunday that it had received communication from the International Cricket Council (ICC) indicating that India informed the ICC of its refusal to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled for February-March 2025. According to the PCB’s statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cited security concerns for its decision, and the PCB has referred this matter to the Government of Pakistan for further guidance.
The PCB withheld additional comments on the ICC’s communication. However, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently mentioned that Pakistan’s official stance would be clarified once they receive a formal notification from the ICC. Previously, the BCCI had indicated it might consider a “Hybrid Model” for the tournament, but Naqvi stated that such an arrangement would not be acceptable to Pakistan.
The Indian cricket team has not visited Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup under the leadership of then-captain MS Dhoni. However, Pakistan has made multiple trips to India, most recently for the 50-over World Cup in 2023.
According to sources, India’s matches for the Champions Trophy may be held in Dubai, which has the largest stadium capacity and advanced facilities following its hosting of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The India-Pakistan fixture, one of the most anticipated matchups in the tournament, is also likely to be held in the UAE.
Last year, Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup using a “Hybrid Model” after India refused to play on Pakistani soil, a precedent that could influence the final arrangement for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
