India claimed their fifth Asian Champions Trophy after a tough 1-0 victory over China, with Jugraj Singh scoring the match-winning goal
17-09-2024India clinched their fifth Asian Champions Trophy crown with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a determined China on Tuesday, September 17. Jugraj Singh netted the decisive goal in the 51st minute, securing the win as the Chinese team pushed the defending champions to their limits. India had already triumphed over China 3-0 in their tournament opener, and although Harmanpreet Singh's squad entered the final as favourites, they had to work hard for the victory.
China started the match strongly, pressing the Indian defence from the outset, as they had in their previous encounter. The first significant opportunity for India came in the opening quarter when Sukhjeet Singh’s clever shot was well blocked by the Chinese goalkeeper.
India earned their first penalty corner in the 9th minute, but China's defence stood firm. Harmanpreet Singh later had another chance but missed the target. China grew stronger towards the end of the first quarter, forcing Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak into making a couple of penalty corner saves.
The second quarter saw both teams locked in a cagey battle, with China focusing on a defensive strategy to keep India at bay. India came close to breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute when Harmanpreet's shot from a penalty corner struck the post. India was also awarded a penalty stroke when Manpreet Singh was fouled, but after a successful review by China, the decision was overturned, and the half ended 0-0.
In the third quarter, India launched several promising attacks, but China’s resolute defence held strong. China also managed to win a couple of penalty corners, but the Indian defence kept them from converting. Pathak produced a crucial save in the 41st minute, preventing China from taking the lead.
As the game entered the final quarter, India intensified their pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 51st minute when Harmanpreet Singh made a brilliant run into the D and set up Jugraj Singh, who calmly slotted the ball home to break the deadlock.
China, now trailing, pushed forward with more urgency and even deployed a flying goalkeeper in search of an equaliser. Despite their efforts, India’s defence stood firm, and the hosts sealed the victory, adding another Asian Champions Trophy to their tally.
