Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the chief guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, shared a lighthearted moment during a dinner hosted in his honour by President Droupadi Murmu. Subianto revealed that a recent DNA test showed he has Indian ancestry, adding a personal touch to the cultural ties between the two nations.
“A few weeks ago, I underwent genetic sequencing, and the test revealed I have Indian DNA,” Subianto said, drawing laughter from the audience, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. “Everyone knows that when I hear Indian music, I start dancing. It must be my Indian genes,” he quipped.
During his address, Subianto highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical connections between India and Indonesia. “A significant portion of our language originates from Sanskrit. Many Indonesian names are Sanskrit-based. The influence of ancient Indian civilisation is deeply embedded in our daily lives,” he remarked, underlining the shared heritage between the two countries.
He also praised PM Modi’s leadership, describing it as “inspirational.” Subianto added, “I am proud to be here in India. I am not a professional politician or diplomat; I speak from the heart. In just a few days, I have learned so much from Prime Minister Modi’s vision and commitment.”
The Indonesian president commended India’s focus on poverty alleviation and social upliftment. “Prime Minister Modi’s dedication to eradicating poverty and supporting the marginalised is an inspiration for us. I wish the people of India prosperity, peace, and greatness in the coming years. May Indonesia and India continue to strengthen their partnership and friendship,” he said.
Earlier, President Subianto joined President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi at the Republic Day celebrations held at Kartavya Path, where he received a ceremonial welcome.
This visit underscored the longstanding relationship between India and Indonesia, with leaders from both nations expressing a commitment to fostering closer ties in the future.
