Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has continued his remarkable performance at the Norway Chess tournament, securing a victory over World Champion Ding Liren in an Armageddon tiebreaker during their Round 7 match. The 18-year-old maintained his focus throughout the classical game and seized a critical moment in the tiebreaker, exploiting Ding Liren's ongoing struggles in the tournament held in Stavanger.

Praggnanandhaa's form in Norway Chess has been outstanding. He made headlines last week by defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a Classical game for the first time and followed up with a win over World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana over the weekend. This impressive run came despite a setback on Monday when he lost an Armageddon tiebreaker to France's Alireza Firouzja.

The win against Ding Liren has bolstered Praggnanandhaa's chances of winning the tournament. He is currently third in the standings of the 6-man Open Section, with 11 points, just 2.5 points behind the leader Magnus Carlsen and 1.5 points behind Hikaru Nakamura.

In another notable Round 7 match, Hikaru Nakamura defeated Magnus Carlsen in an Armageddon tiebreaker, keeping the pressure on the tournament leader.

Praggnanandhaa has demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill throughout the tournament, achieving two outright wins and two Armageddon victories. His next match, a much-anticipated rematch against Magnus Carlsen, is expected to draw significant attention.

The young chess prodigy from Chennai has gained many admirers for his calm demeanor and confident play in Stavanger. Meanwhile, Ding Liren, who recently won the World Championship title against Ian Nepomniachtchi, has appeared out of sorts and will need to regain his form for his upcoming match against India's D Gukesh.

FIDE, the governing body of chess, has received bids from Delhi, Chennai, and Singapore to host the next World Championship match, highlighting the global interest in the event.

Norway Chess Open Section Standings after Round 7:

  1. Magnus Carlsen - 13 points
  2. Hikaru Nakamura - 12.5 points
  3. R Praggnanandhaa - 11 points
  4. Alireza Firouzja - 9.5 points
  5. Fabiano Caruana - 7.5 points
  6. Ding Liren - 3.5 points
