Indian Railways is set to introduce a significantly upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS), marking one of the biggest technological overhauls of its ticketing infrastructure in decades. The new platform is expected to become operational from August and is aimed at delivering a smoother, faster and more reliable booking experience for passengers.
A review meeting on the project was attended by Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, along with senior railway officials overseeing the modernisation initiative.
Replacing a System That Served for Nearly Four Decades
The existing reservation network has been in operation since 1986 and, despite periodic enhancements, has largely continued to function on its original framework. With online bookings witnessing massive growth over the years, the need for a more advanced and scalable system became increasingly important.
The new reservation platform has been developed using updated digital architecture and enhanced processing capabilities to accommodate rising passenger demand and heavy booking traffic.
Railway ticketing moved online in 2002, transforming the way passengers reserve seats. Today, digital channels dominate the booking process, with the vast majority of travellers choosing mobile apps and websites over physical reservation counters.
Officials estimate that nearly 88 per cent of all railway ticket reservations are now completed through online platforms.
RailOne App Gains Popularity
The upgraded reservation system is part of Indian Railways' broader digital transformation programme. A key component of this effort is the RailOne application, launched in July 2025, which has witnessed rapid adoption among passengers.
Within less than a year of its launch, the app has crossed 3.5 crore downloads, reflecting growing demand for integrated railway services through a single digital platform.
The application enables users to reserve tickets, cancel bookings, monitor train movements, access coach and platform details, submit complaints and utilise several passenger services without switching between multiple applications.
Railway data indicates that approximately 9.29 lakh tickets are booked daily through the app, including both reserved and unreserved categories.
AI-Powered Waitlist Forecasts Improve Travel Planning
One of the standout features introduced by Indian Railways is an artificial intelligence-based waitlist prediction tool. The technology analyses booking patterns and historical data to estimate the likelihood of a waitlisted ticket being confirmed before departure.
According to railway officials, the system's accuracy has improved substantially over time, helping passengers make more informed travel decisions and reducing uncertainty around waitlisted bookings.
Focus on Speed, Capacity and Passenger Convenience
With the upgraded reservation system expected to go live in August, Indian Railways aims to significantly improve efficiency, reduce booking-related challenges and enhance the overall passenger experience.
The modernised platform is expected to support higher booking volumes, faster transaction processing and advanced digital services, positioning the railway network to better serve millions of passengers across the country in the years ahead.
