Instagram is reportedly testing a new profile layout that moves away from the traditional square grid, introducing a vertical design instead. Since its launch, Instagram has used the familiar square grid format, but this potential update could signal a significant shift for the platform. Currently, only a select group of users have access to this new vertical layout, according to reports.

Christine Pai, a spokesperson for Instagram, mentioned that the platform will gather feedback from users before deciding whether to roll out the change more broadly. She acknowledged that some users have tailored their profiles specifically to the square grid, making user input crucial in this decision-making process, as reported by The Verge.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri provided further insight, explaining that the shift towards a vertical profile grid is in response to user behavior. Most content uploaded to the platform, including 4:3 photos and 9:16 videos, is already vertical. Mosseri noted that forcing this content into a square grid can negatively impact its appearance, making the vertical layout a more suitable option.

He also pointed out that the square format was originally designed back when Instagram only allowed square photo uploads.

This new vertical profile grid could be a welcome change, particularly for users who primarily create vertical content, as it would allow them to share posts and reels without cropping, preserving the original aspect ratio.

In addition to this potential change, Instagram has recently increased the number of media uploads allowed in a single post from 10 to 20. While not everyone may need that much space, it could be beneficial for storytellers and content creators.

The combination of a vertical grid and the ability to include up to 20 media pieces could significantly alter how users engage with the platform. This update promises to enhance the Instagram experience, offering new ways to create and consume content.
