Onboard the International Space Station (ISS), Commander Sunita Williams and NASA Flight Engineer Butch Wilmore tackled a variety of scientific and maintenance tasks to support ongoing missions.

Wilmore took the lead on fire safety research by working with the Combustion Integrated Rack, a specialized facility for studying how flames behave in microgravity. He replaced experiment samples to further research on flame spread, soot production, and material flammability—essential for improving fire prevention measures in space and potentially enhancing fire safety on Earth.

In addition to his research duties, Wilmore performed vital maintenance on spacesuits. He prepared a recently delivered suit from the SpaceX Dragon cargo mission, removing securing hardware and installing camera and data cables. He also conducted standard servicing on two spacesuits in the Quest airlock, including refilling their water tanks, ensuring they are mission-ready for future spacewalks.

Commander Williams focused her efforts on maintenance in the Tranquility module, specifically the waste and hygiene compartment, which functions as the station’s bathroom. Wilmore provided support during breaks from his primary tasks.

The crew’s day underscored the wide range of responsibilities astronauts manage aboard the ISS. From advancing scientific understanding through experiments like those in the Combustion Integrated Rack to maintaining life support systems and spacesuit readiness, their efforts are crucial to both current and future space missions.

The ongoing combustion research is especially significant, as it not only improves fire safety in space but also has potential applications for fire prevention and suppression technologies back on Earth.
