Jay Shah Confident Rohit Sharma Will Lead India to Victory in WTC 2025 and Champions Trophy
BCCI secretary Jay Shah affirms Rohit Sharma's captaincy for upcoming ICC tournaments and expresses confidence in India's continued success
07-07-2024On Sunday, July 7, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue as India's captain for the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the Champions Trophy. Shah expressed confidence that under Rohit's leadership, India will secure victories in two more ICC tournaments next year. Praising the team's efforts in their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Shah backed India to shine under Rohit's captaincy for at least another year.
Jay Shah reflected on his earlier support for the Rohit Sharma-led team to win the T20 World Cup and expressed joy that his prediction came true. He mentioned that the disappointment of the 2023 ODI World Cup final motivated the Indian team to achieve historic success in the USA and the West Indies.
"On November 23, after winning 10 matches, we won hearts, but we were not able to win the Cup. I said in Rajkot that on June 29 that we will win hearts, win the Cup and hoist the flag in Barbados. And our captain hoisted it there," Jay Shah stated in a BCCI video.
"After this win, the upcoming ICC events -- WTC final and the Champions Trophy, I am fully confident that our team, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, will become champions," he added.
Earlier in the year, Jay Shah had predicted India's T20 World Cup victory in Barbados during a media address in Rajkot. India lived up to the expectation by securing their second T20 World Cup title, defeating South Africa in the final on June 29 in Barbados.
Following the T20 World Cup win, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20I cricket, ending their careers in the shortest format on a high note. Jay Shah previously confirmed that these senior players would participate in the Champions Trophy. By reaffirming Rohit's captaincy for the upcoming year in Tests and ODIs, the board has shown continued faith in his leadership abilities.
India's World Cup stars are set to return to action during their tour of Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to begin later in July. For the next 12 months, the senior players will likely concentrate on Tests and ODIs.
Currently, India sits atop the World Test Championship table with six wins in nine Tests in the 2023-25 cycle. India will host Bangladesh and New Zealand for home Tests before facing Australia in a 5-Test Border-Gavaskar series in Australia. The Champions Trophy will take place in February-March 2025, marking the return of the 50-over tournament to the cricket calendar for the first time since 2017.
