Jay Shah Elected ICC Chairman, Set to Become Youngest Leader in Cricket's History
Jay Shah, the 35-year-old Secretary of the BCCI, has been elected unopposed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council, succeeding Greg Barclay
27-08-2024Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on August 27, 2024. At 35, Shah will be the youngest person to lead the global cricket governing body. His nomination, which was submitted on the final day, sees him succeeding Greg Barclay, who decided not to seek a third term. Shah will officially assume the role on December 1, 2024.
The ICC had stated earlier this month that a vote for the chairmanship would only be necessary if multiple candidates were nominated. Shah was the sole nominee, ensuring his unopposed election.
As Shah prepares to step into his new role, it remains uncertain who will take over as the BCCI secretary when he vacates the position at the end of November.
Shah’s appointment comes at a significant time for cricket, as the sport looks to expand its global presence, particularly with cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shah has previously served as the chair of the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs subcommittee, a key role in managing the sport’s finances.
In a statement, the ICC announced, "Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has served as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term."
Shah will be the fifth Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
Shah Advocates for Innovation in Cricket
In his statement, Shah emphasized the need for fresh thinking to enhance cricket's global appeal. "We are at a crucial point where it’s essential to balance different formats, promote advanced technologies, and introduce our major events to new global markets. Our objective is to make cricket more inclusive and popular worldwide," he said. He also highlighted the importance of innovation to elevate the sport's global profile.
Shah’s Rise in Cricket Administration
Jay Shah has swiftly advanced through cricket administration, starting with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2009. By 2013, he was appointed joint secretary of the GCA, contributing to the development of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s largest cricket stadium.
His achievements at the GCA paved the way for his role in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), where he joined in 2015 as a member of the finance and marketing committees. Shah was elected BCCI secretary in 2019 at age 31, becoming the youngest person to hold the position.
Under his leadership, the BCCI achieved notable milestones, including securing a record-breaking broadcasting rights deal for the 2022 Indian Premier League and overseeing the Indian cricket team's success in various tournaments, including the Asia Cup and World Test Championship.
