The family did not reveal the cause of death but described his passing as sudden. They also shared that Neill was free of cancer at the time of his death. In 2023, the actor had publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer, in 2022 and had undergone treatment.
In their statement, the family remembered him as a man who faced life with dignity and grace. They also expressed gratitude to the medical team at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney for their care and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the actor, praising his remarkable contribution to cinema and television. He described Neill as a performer whose intelligence, wit and resilience earned him admiration across Australia and beyond.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he relocated to New Zealand as a child after his family settled there in the 1950s. During his school years, he adopted the name "Sam," which he later kept throughout his career.
Neill initially pursued a law degree before deciding to follow his passion for acting. He began performing in university theatre productions before joining Wellington's Downstage Theatre, where he launched his professional acting career.
His breakthrough came with the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs, which introduced him to international audiences. Over the following years, he built an impressive résumé with performances in films including My Brilliant Career, Possession, Evil Angels (A Cry in the Dark), The Hunt for Red October and Ivanhoe.
Neill achieved worldwide recognition in 1993 with two major releases—Jane Campion's Academy Award-winning The Piano and Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Jurassic Park. His portrayal of palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant became one of the franchise's most memorable characters.
He later reprised the role in Jurassic Park III and returned nearly three decades later for Jurassic World Dominion, delighting longtime fans of the series.
Over a career that lasted more than 50 years, Neill appeared in over 150 film and television productions. His notable film credits include Dead Calm, Event Horizon, The Jungle Book, In the Mouth of Madness, Bicentennial Man, The Dish, Peter Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Television audiences also knew him through series such as Peaky Blinders, The Tudors, The Twelve, The Simpsons and Rick and Morty. He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Reilly, Ace of Spies.
Outside the entertainment industry, Neill developed a successful vineyard, Two Paddocks, in New Zealand's Central Otago region. He frequently shared moments from his rural life with fans and became known for his love of farming and animals.
In his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, published in 2023, Neill reflected openly on his battle with cancer, explaining that writing the book became a source of strength while undergoing treatment.
Remembered for his versatility, warmth and enduring screen presence, Sam Neill leaves behind an extraordinary body of work that influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences around the world.
