Kap’s Cafe, the newly launched eatery owned by comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey, British Columbia, has issued a strong statement following a shocking shooting incident late Wednesday night. The cafe, which opened with the intention of fostering a warm and welcoming community space, expressed its dismay over the attack but affirmed its commitment to stand against violence.
In a message shared on Instagram, the establishment wrote, “Kap’s Cafe was created to bring people together over great coffee and heartfelt conversations. It's deeply upsetting to see violence touch this dream. While we’re still coming to terms with what happened, we remain steadfast in our purpose and will not be discouraged.”
The cafe was reportedly struck by gunfire from unidentified individuals. No injuries were reported, though the property sustained visible damage. Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi—wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and affiliated with the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI)—later claimed responsibility for the incident, allegedly referencing a past comment made by Kapil Sharma as the motive.
Canadian journalist Sameer Kaushal reported that about a dozen bullets were fired at the cafe. A video he posted on X (formerly Twitter) revealed shattered windows and bullet holes across the cafe’s front.
The statement from Kap’s Cafe also thanked its supporters, saying, “Your encouragement gives us strength. This cafe thrives because of your belief in our vision. We choose resilience, and we will continue to be a space of community and care.”
The Surrey Police Service confirmed the incident occurred around 1:50 AM on July 10 and that staff members were inside at the time of the shooting. Fortunately, no one was harmed. Authorities are now investigating possible links to other incidents and working to determine a motive. No suspects have been identified yet.
Meanwhile, Kapil Sharma’s latest season of his popular comedy show premiered on Netflix on June 21, featuring celebrity guests including Salman Khan and leading OTT stars.
