A preliminary investigation into the shocking rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has unveiled chilling details about the accused, Sanjay Roy. Police sources revealed that Roy consumed alcohol and watched violent pornographic videos on his mobile phone before committing the crime.
On the night of the incident, Roy reportedly went to a secluded area behind the hospital to drink alcohol, a spot he frequently visited. His mobile phone was found to be almost full of violent porn videos, leading investigators to suggest that he might have had severe psychological issues or been driven by perverse tendencies.
Roy entered the hospital premises multiple times on the night of the crime. The victim, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, was discovered raped and murdered in the seminar room of the Department of Chest Medicine the following morning. The autopsy report revealed severe injuries, including bleeding from her private parts, and wounds on her abdomen, neck, left leg, right hand, and lips.
The Department of Chest Medicine has two entry points, one of which was closed on the night of the crime, leaving the back door open. CCTV footage showed five to six people entering the department through this entrance around 4 a.m., but police later confirmed that these individuals were attending to relatives admitted to the hospital and had legitimate reasons for being there. Roy, however, had no valid reason to be present.
Further investigation indicated that after committing the crime, Roy attempted to destroy evidence by washing away bloodstains from the scene. CCTV footage captured him leaving the seminar room at approximately 4:45 a.m. Following the crime, Roy returned to the barracks of the 4th Battalion, where he fell asleep. He was arrested at the barracks while still intoxicated.
Roy has been charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS and has been remanded to police custody until August 23. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragic crime.
