Mumbai Police have arrested actor and self-proclaimed film critic Kamaal R Khan, widely known as KRK, in connection with a firing incident near a residential complex in Andheri where writer-director Neeraj Kumar Mishra lives. Khan has been remanded to police custody until January 27 as investigations continue.
According to officials, Khan was picked up from his studio late Friday night and questioned by a police team before being formally arrested. During interrogation, he reportedly acknowledged discharging four rounds from his licensed firearm on January 18. The weapon allegedly used in the incident has since been seized by the police.
Authorities said the exact reason behind the firing is still under examination. During questioning, Khan maintained that he did not intend to injure anyone. He told investigators that the shots were fired while he was cleaning and checking his firearm.
As per his statement, Khan claimed he believed he was firing towards an open mangrove stretch located in front of his residence, which he assumed was a safe direction. However, he suggested that strong winds may have altered the trajectory of one of the bullets, causing it to strike a nearby building in the Oshiwara area.
Police officials confirmed that filmmaker Neeraj Kumar Mishra stays on the second floor of the affected building, while model Prateek Baid resides on the fourth floor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Initially, investigators had little information about the person responsible for the firing. The breakthrough came after technical and on-ground enquiries led them to Khan. He remains in police custody as officers continue to verify his claims and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, police said.
