Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved and influential stars, has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a timeless legacy and millions of grieving fans
24-11-2025Veteran Bollywood icon Dharmendra passed away at the age of 89 at his Mumbai residence on Monday. The celebrated actor had been hospitalised earlier this month at Breach Candy Hospital due to breathing complications. Known across generations as Hindi cinema’s beloved “He-Man”, Dharmendra leaves behind a towering film legacy of more than sixty years. His final performance will be seen in the upcoming film Ikkis, scheduled to release on December 25, 2025.
Dharmendra is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his children — actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, along with Ajeeta and Vijeta.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8 in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, he entered the film industry after his marriage to Prakash Kaur in 1954. His acting journey began with the 1960 release Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, marking the start of one of Indian cinema’s most enduring careers. Whether intense drama, romance, or comedy, Dharmendra excelled across genres—earning him widespread admiration and the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2012.
Over the decades, he delivered some of Hindi cinema’s biggest blockbusters, including Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Chupke Chupke, Naukar Biwi Ka, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, and Dharam Veer. His charisma and versatility made him one of Indian cinema’s most adored screen legends.
Dharmendra continued evolving with time, appealing to younger audiences with memorable roles in films such as Life in A… Metro, the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise with his sons, and more recently Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, where his tender portrayal won hearts once again. His last theatrical release was the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya with Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
Beyond acting, the star also made his mark as a producer. His film Ghayal, starring his son Sunny Deol, won the National Award for Best Popular Film Offering Wholesome Entertainment. He also picked up several Filmfare honours throughout his career.
Even in his later years, Dharmendra remained deeply connected to his fans. On social media, he regularly shared heartfelt posts about farming, fitness, and simplicity—often filmed on his farmland while he worked on tractors or tended to crops.
With his passing, Indian cinema loses not only a legendary artist but a warm, grounded personality who bridged generations and shaped the golden era of Hindi films. His screen presence, charm, and unforgettable performances will continue to inspire and live on through the stories he helped shape.
