Rohit Bal, a towering figure in Indian fashion, departed this world on Friday evening at 63, leaving an indelible mark on the industry with his luminous, dreamy eyes and vibrant spirit.

Bal, known affectionately as "Gudda," was often likened to John Galliano for his daring creativity. His designs were steeped in the beauty he saw in Kashmir, his homeland, and the elegance he found in Indian women. Rohit brought Kashmir to the forefront of fashion, creating garments that embodied the essence of "Kashmiriyat" and a timeless Indian aesthetic.

Celebrated as a pioneer of Indian haute couture, Gudda’s signature motifs of lotus flowers and peacocks became iconic in the industry. Over decades, he skillfully adapted his designs to different eras, making his label a staple in the Hall of Fame of global fashion. His creations were richly layered and vibrant, blending opulence with a delicate artistry. From his long, flowy kurtas to his intricately embroidered velvets, Bal's work exuded a passionate sensuality, reflecting his belief that true beauty lies in strength balanced by gentleness.

Just two weeks before his passing, Bal presented his final show, Kaaynaat - A Bloom in the Universe, as the closing spectacle at Lakme Fashion Week. It was a heartfelt tribute to Kashmir, where he danced joyfully with the models, unaware this would be his last bow.

A graduate of St. Stephen’s College in history and an alumnus of NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), Bal had a deep understanding of India’s cultural heritage, which he wove seamlessly into his designs. His vision was one of extravagance, a characteristic he celebrated openly, even as the world leaned toward minimalism. His grand runway shows, filled with color and pageantry, made an enduring impression on all who witnessed them.

In addition to his fashion, Bal made his mark in Delhi’s restaurant scene by co-founding Veda with Suveer Saran, a Michelin-star chef. Known for its opulent decor, Veda became as much a cultural landmark as his fashion shows. Bal was also famous for his exuberant parties, where he was a carefree spirit, dancing through the night and enjoying life to the fullest. Friends and admirers saw him as a complex character – unfiltered, bold, and endlessly charismatic.

Rohit Bal was a visionary whose designs transcended the runway, destined to be cherished in museums and hearts alike. His legacy will shine on, immortal in the world of fashion, a testament to a life filled with passion, grandeur, and a unique, untamed spirit. Legends, as they say, never truly leave us; they live on forever in their creations.
