Veteran BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, 98, was admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Friday evening with a chest infection. His condition is stable, and he is being treated in the hospital's pulmonary department.
Advani was brought to the hospital at around 7.30 pm. He was previously admitted to Apollo in May for age-related ailments and discharged after a few days.
The veteran leader was also hospitalised several times in 2024, including at Apollo and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). During a hospital stay in December that year, he received intensive care before being discharged on December 25.
Modi Met Advani Earlier This Month
The latest hospitalisation comes nine days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Advani at his Delhi residence on October 7 to seek his blessings on completing 25 years in government leadership.
Modi later praised Advani's decades of public service, saying his contribution had left a lasting mark on national life. Modi became Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001, and took office as prime minister in 2014.
Advani was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in March 2024. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award at his residence in the presence of Modi and other senior leaders.
Advani's Political Career
Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani moved to India during Partition in 1947 and became a key figure in the BJP's rise. He served three terms as the party's president and held the Union Home Minister's portfolio in the government led by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Advani served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004.
