09-05-2026The Government of India has named N. S. Raja Subramani as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will assume office after Anil Chauhan completes his term on May 30, 2026.
In addition to leading the armed forces in his capacity as CDS, Lt Gen Subramani will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, a role central to coordinating defence policy and integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
With more than 40 years in uniform, Lt Gen Subramani brings extensive operational and strategic experience. Over the course of his career, he has commanded formations along both the western frontier facing Pakistan and the northern borders adjoining China — two of India’s most sensitive theatres.
He has previously held key appointments including Vice Chief of Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Central Command. Since September 2025, he has been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat, contributing to high-level security planning.
Colleagues describe him as a decisive and astute leader, with one senior officer reportedly terming the appointment among the strongest leadership choices made by the government in recent years.
In a parallel development, Krishna Swaminathan is set to take charge as the next Chief of the Naval Staff beginning May 31, 2026, marking a broader transition in India’s top military leadership.
The upcoming changes signal a new phase in India’s defence establishment, with experienced officers stepping into pivotal roles at a time of evolving regional security dynamics.
