Authorities in Prayagraj have intensified efforts to combat misinformation surrounding the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Vaibhav Krishna reported that legal action has been taken against multiple social media accounts for spreading false content related to the religious festival.
"A total of 13 FIRs have been lodged against 140 social media accounts for sharing misleading information," Krishna informed ANI. Despite attempts to circulate false narratives, the event continues to witness an overwhelming number of devotees.
In an earlier crackdown, authorities targeted 34 social media accounts that falsely reported a train fire incident. A viral video inaccurately claimed that 300 people lost their lives in a blaze on a train bound for the Maha Kumbh on February 14. However, investigations revealed that the footage actually depicted a 2022 train fire in Bangladesh involving the Parbat Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet railway route.
DIG Krishna also reassured the public about the preparations for the upcoming Maha Shivratri festival on February 26, 2025.
"Comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to manage the Shivratri celebrations. We are taking steps to prevent traffic congestion in the Mahakumbh area and ensure smooth operations. Regardless of the crowd size, we are fully equipped to handle the situation," he stated.
Meanwhile, stringent crowd management measures have been introduced at Ayodhya Dham Railway Station to accommodate the rising number of devotees.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yashwant Singh outlined the security measures, stating, "Security has been heightened in anticipation of the Mahakumbh 'snan' on Maha Shivratri. Over 350 personnel have been deployed, and barricading has been installed throughout the premises. A holding area has also been designated for passengers."
Singh further added, "Continuous announcements are being made to keep travelers informed. Entry is permitted only when the respective train arrives at the platform. We are closely monitoring the platform capacity to prevent overcrowding, ensuring a seamless experience for devotees."
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the event's massive scale, revealing that over 60 crore pilgrims have already participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
