Maharashtra has recorded its first fatality from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, as a patient in Solapur succumbed to the condition. Meanwhile, Pune has reported a sharp rise in GBS cases, with the total climbing to 101, prompting concern among health authorities.
The deceased patient, who was being treated at a private hospital in Solapur, initially suffered from diarrhoea along with cough and cold symptoms. Admitted to the ICU on January 18, his condition improved temporarily, leading to a transfer to a regular ward. However, his health deteriorated suddenly when he experienced severe breathing difficulties and passed away after being readmitted to the ICU.
Pune is at the center of the GBS surge, with 28 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 101. Among these, 16 patients are currently on ventilator support. The affected include 19 children under nine years old and 23 individuals aged between 50 and 80.
Laboratory tests have identified the presence of Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium known to trigger GBS, in samples from several patients. In response, authorities have ramped up water quality checks in areas with high case numbers. Recent tests on water samples from a well near Khadakwasla Dam, Pune's main water supply source, revealed elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. However, it remains unclear whether this particular well is in active use.
Health officials are continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak and are urging residents to take precautions, including drinking safe, treated water and maintaining hygiene.
