Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to Visit India on Thursday
Zameer's India visit on May 9 marks first high-level trip since president Muizzu assumed office
08-05-2024Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer is set to embark on an official visit to India on May 9, marking the first high-level engagement between the two nations since President Mohamed Muizzu, perceived as pro-China, assumed office six months ago.
The visit, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, aims to bolster bilateral cooperation between India and the Maldives, despite recent strains in their relationship. President Muizzu's insistence on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives has added tension to the ties.
With the majority of Indian military personnel already withdrawn, President Muizzu had set a deadline of May 10 for the complete withdrawal. Zameer's visit is expected to include discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on various bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest.
Highlighting the importance of the Maldives as a key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region, the visit is anticipated to reinforce the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
The Maldivian foreign ministry also expressed expectations for fruitful discussions aimed at deepening and expanding cooperation between the Maldives and India, emphasizing Zameer's first official visit to India since assuming office.
