Man Behind Mumbai Billboard Collapse: Rape Accused and Aspiring MLA
Culpable Homicide Charge Filed Against Bhavesh Bhinde for Mumbai Billboard Collapse
14-05-2024Following the collapse of a billboard erected by his company during a storm in Mumbai's Ghatkopar, resulting in 14 fatalities and at least 74 injuries, Bhavesh Bhinde faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Bhinde, owner of Ego Media, has a history of legal entanglements, including over 20 cases, including one of rape, and is currently evading law enforcement.
Despite contesting state elections as an Independent candidate in 2009, Bhinde's affidavit revealed 23 cases against him under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act and the Negotiable Instruments Act. Recently, he faced allegations of rape, with a chargesheet already filed against him.
Bhinde's company secured contracts from Indian Railways and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for hoardings and banners, flouting regulations multiple times. He is implicated in tree-poisoning and tree-cutting cases as well.
The collapsed hoarding, a 120X120-foot structure, exceeded BMC's permissible size limit of 40X40 feet, prompting action against illegal hoardings across the city. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani emphasized the necessity of municipal approval for billboards, despite claims of permission from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways).
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured government coverage for the injured victims' medical expenses.
