Tensions surged in Manipur as the recovery of six missing persons’ bodies triggered widespread protests, culminating in attacks on the homes of ministers and MLAs. Protesters ransacked several residences, including that of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s son-in-law, setting many ablaze. Security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds attempting to storm the Chief Minister’s residence in Imphal.

Protests and Arson in Imphal and Beyond

Residences of three ministers—Health Minister Sapam Ranjan, Consumer Affairs Minister L. Susindro Singh, and Municipal Administration Minister Y. Khemchand—were targeted. Violence erupted in Jiribam, where at least two churches and three homes were torched. Prohibitory orders were imposed indefinitely in five districts, with curfews enforced in Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. Internet and mobile data services were suspended for two days in seven districts.

Amid the chaos, 23 individuals were arrested in Imphal and Bishnupur for their involvement in arson and vandalism. Authorities also recovered firearms, ammunition, and mobile phones during raids.

Renewed AFSPA Debate

The Manipur government appealed to the Centre to withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from six police station areas, following its recent reimposition in violence-hit regions, including Jiribam. Civil society group Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) demanded immediate military action against militants and the repeal of AFSPA.

Recoveries and Reactions

The bodies of six individuals, including women and children, were found over the weekend in Jiribam’s Barak River. They were reportedly abducted by Kuki militants during an attack on a police station earlier in the week.

Congress leaders criticized the BJP-led state and central governments for their handling of the crisis. Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and address the unrest, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP of fostering divisive politics.

Security Measures and Regional Concerns

The Union Home Ministry pledged strict action against those inciting violence, as fears mounted over the unrest spreading to neighboring states. Mizoram’s government advised residents to exercise caution to avoid communal tensions. Meanwhile, CRPF Director General Aneesh Dayal was dispatched to Manipur for an urgent assessment of the situation.

As the violence continues, the government faces mounting pressure to restore peace and address the deepening divisions in the state.
