Massive landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district have claimed at least 106 lives, injured 128, and left hundreds trapped amid heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning. Rescue efforts are underway, involving multiple agencies such as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army, after three landslides hit the region within four hours.

Worst affected are the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, with many feared to have been swept away in the Chaliyar river. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the event as a "heart-wrenching disaster" and declared two days of state mourning. He noted that the extreme rainfall wiped out entire localities, with numerous residents having been swept away overnight.

The Indian Army has deployed 225 personnel, including medical teams, and two Air Force helicopters—a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter)—are assisting in rescue operations. A control center has been established in Calicut under the Para Regiment to coordinate relief efforts.

Kerala minister Veena George announced that the Indian Navy would also aid the rescue operations. However, access has been complicated by the destruction of a bridge that connected affected areas to Chooralmala town, and large boulders blocking rescue paths. Despite the challenges, around 70 injured individuals have received treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured Chief Minister Vijayan of the Centre’s support. The Prime Minister's Office announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Visuals from the disaster show widespread destruction, including uprooted trees, destroyed homes, and vehicles stuck in floodwaters. Continuous rainfall and blocked roads are hampering rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Vijayan stated that a delegation of five ministers is overseeing the relief operations in Wayanad. A control room has been opened, and emergency helpline numbers (9656938689 and 8086010833) have been issued. Many families have been relocated to camps or relatives' homes.

Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the landslides and the consequent loss of lives. He has been in contact with the Kerala Chief Minister and Wayanad District Collector to ensure effective coordination of rescue efforts and has pledged to seek additional support from Union Ministers.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in Kasargod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Idukki districts, advising extreme caution for locals and tourists.
