Singer Mika Singh has come out in strong support of his elder brother, Daler Mehndi, following allegations that the veteran performer appeared intoxicated during a stage show in Uttarakhand. Defending his brother’s character, Mika has challenged anyone to produce evidence of Daler consuming alcohol, declaring that he would give up singing if the claim could be proven.

The controversy erupted after videos from a performance at the Kunjapuri Mela in Narendranagar circulated online. Uttarakhand MLA Subodh Uniyal reportedly expressed displeasure over Daler’s performance, questioning his singing and alleging that he was under the influence of alcohol. The episode triggered a heated debate on social media, with viewers divided over the singer’s performance and the allegations against him.

Responding to the criticism in a video statement, Mika dismissed the suggestion that his brother had been drinking. He also pointed to Daler’s health, saying the singer had recently undergone major surgery and was not in the best physical condition when he took the stage.

Mika argued that Daler’s long career and professional reputation should be taken into account before such accusations were made. He maintained that his brother had honoured a prior commitment despite his health concerns.

Mika says performers honour commitments despite illness

Explaining why an artist might continue with a scheduled performance while unwell, Mika said singers often feel obligated to fulfil their promises to event organisers, irrespective of the circumstances.

He said performers sometimes go on stage even when they are suffering from severe fever or exhaustion because they have already committed to an event. Mika suggested that Daler may have followed the same approach rather than cancelling his appearance.

The singer also drew a distinction between criticism of a performance and allegations about an artist’s personal conduct. While acknowledging that an organiser who pays for a show can question the quality of the performance, he rejected the claim that Daler was intoxicated.

Mika reinforced his defence with a public challenge, saying he was prepared to leave the music industry if anyone could substantiate claims that his brother had been seen drinking alcohol.

Viral Uttarakhand performance sparks backlash

The dispute gained momentum after footage from the event showed Uniyal taking the stage and expressing dissatisfaction with the performance. Reports said the MLA accused Daler of not singing properly and alleged that alcohol was involved.

The clips quickly spread online, prompting criticism, jokes and expressions of support for the veteran singer. The controversy also brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the event and Daler’s reported health condition.

Mika’s response has shifted the debate towards the distinction between a disappointing live performance and allegations about the performer’s conduct. His claims about his brother’s health and personal habits represent his defence of Daler; the accusation of intoxication has not been independently established here.

Daler Mehndi remains active in music

Despite the controversy, Daler Mehndi continues to be associated with his long-running music career and popular catalogue. One of his best-known tracks, Na Na Na Na Na Re, was revisited in the 2024 comedy film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, starring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri.

The latest episode has put the singer back in the spotlight, with Mika’s forceful defence drawing attention alongside the viral footage from Uttarakhand.
