Bollywood icon Mithun Chakraborty has been selected to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X (formerly Twitter). Vaishnaw expressed his honor in revealing the decision made by the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury, highlighting Chakraborty's significant contributions to Indian cinema. The award will be presented during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024.
Earlier this year, Chakraborty was also honored with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, recognizing his extensive impact on the film industry.
For context, the previous recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was Waheeda Rehman, celebrated for her performances in classic films like Guide, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Chaudhvin Ka Chand.
Mithun Chakraborty, born in Kolkata, made his acting debut in the 1976 film Mrigayaa, which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. He later won two more National Film Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). More recently, he appeared in the acclaimed film The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri. Additionally, his son, Namashi Chakraborty, recently made his Bollywood debut in Bad Boy.
