After the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution opposing the NEET exam on Friday, Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking both an exemption for Tamil Nadu from the test and the abolition of the system at the national level.

In his letter, Stalin reiterated Tamil Nadu's consistent demand to exempt the state from NEET for medical college admissions and to eliminate the system nationwide. He argued that the selection process for professional courses should be based solely on 12th standard marks rather than a separate entrance exam, which he described as an unnecessary additional stress on students.

Stalin highlighted that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a Bill to exempt the state from NEET and provide medical admissions based on 12th standard marks. This Bill has been sent for Presidential assent, but the approval is still pending.

The Chief Minister further noted that recent irregularities during the NEET Examination have validated the Tamil Nadu government's opposition to it. He mentioned that other states are also voicing their concerns about the current selection process.

Stalin urged the Union Government to approve the Bill exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET and to amend the National Medical Commission Act to abolish the selection process at the national level. He enclosed a copy of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Resolution and expressed hope for early intervention.

The resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly claimed that NEET has disadvantaged students from rural areas, undermined the value of school education, and stripped the state's ability to allocate medical college seats. Stalin emphasized that NEET should be removed, Tamil Nadu should be given an exemption, and the central government should approve the Bill allowing Class 12 marks as the necessary qualification to pursue medicine.

Additionally, Stalin has written to the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and West Bengal, urging them to consider passing a similar resolution in their respective state assemblies to call for the abolition of NEET.
