National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan indicated on Wednesday that US President Joe Biden anticipates a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the upcoming G7 Summit in Italy. Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to Italy, Sullivan noted that while the formal confirmation of Modi's attendance rests with Indian authorities, it is expected that the two leaders will have an opportunity to engage during the summit.
Biden recently spoke with Modi over the phone during their concurrent visits to Paris, where he extended congratulations on Modi's re-election and third term as Prime Minister. Modi is scheduled to embark on his first international trip since assuming office, traveling to Italy on Thursday for the G7 Summit, where India has been invited as an Outreach Country for the 50th edition of the summit on June 14.
Confirming Modi's itinerary, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra stated that the Indian Prime Minister will also meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While specific details regarding other bilateral engagements are still being finalized, Modi's presence at the summit underscores India's role in global affairs and its growing diplomatic engagements.
