Rescue teams in Myanmar are in a desperate race against time to locate survivors after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday, causing widespread destruction. The death toll has surged to 1,700, with at least 17 additional casualties reported in Thailand. As authorities struggle to assess the full extent of the disaster, buildings, roads, and bridges lie in ruins, leaving many regions cut off from aid.

In response to the crisis, Myanmar's shadow government, the National Unity Government (NUG), has declared a partial ceasefire in the country’s ongoing civil conflict to facilitate relief efforts. According to the Associated Press, the number of injured has climbed to 3,408, with 139 people still missing. Officials warn that the figures may rise further as search and rescue operations continue.

Myanmar and Thailand Struggle Amidst Widespread Devastation

Mandalay, the worst-affected city, remains in chaos as rescue workers and residents dig through the rubble in search of survivors. The initial earthquake, which struck near Mandalay, was followed by a strong 6.7-magnitude aftershock, compounding the destruction in the city of 1.7 million people.

Win Lwin, a local tea shop owner, described the grim reality as he sifted through the wreckage of a collapsed restaurant. “Seven people died here. I’m looking for more bodies, but I don’t think anyone else survived,” he told AFP.

India and Global Community Extend Aid

India has responded swiftly, dispatching five military aircraft carrying medical supplies, food, and emergency aid. An 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and military field hospitals have also been deployed to Myanmar. In addition, naval ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are en route with 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to assist in relief operations.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has raised concerns over Myanmar’s inadequate medical infrastructure, warning that the country lacks the necessary equipment to handle a disaster of this magnitude. Aid agencies have also sounded the alarm, emphasizing that the earthquake has only exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis in a nation where 3.5 million people have been displaced by conflict and are at risk of severe food shortages.

Thailand Also Hit Hard

In neighboring Thailand, the earthquake caused the collapse of a 30-story skyscraper under construction in Bangkok, killing at least 17 people and injuring 32 others. Another 83 individuals are still missing, believed to be trapped under the debris near the bustling Chatuchak market. Rescue teams, equipped with mechanical diggers, sniffer dogs, and thermal imaging drones, are working around the clock in a desperate bid to locate survivors.

As Myanmar and Thailand reel from the catastrophic impact, relief workers continue their relentless efforts, hoping to save as many lives as possible before time runs out.
