Veteran actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on Thursday, October 8, after suffering a medical emergency at his residence in Goa. Doctors at Manipal Hospital said attempts to revive him continued for nearly 45 minutes.

According to Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of Oncology at Manipal Hospital, Patekar had contacted a friend during the early hours of Thursday saying that he was feeling unwell and experiencing chest pain.

The actor reportedly sent the message at around 2:30 am. His friend did not notice it immediately and later called Patekar before going to his residence.

Patekar found unconscious at home

The friend reached Patekar's Goa residence at around 4 am and found the actor sweating and in a deteriorating condition.

Dr Salkar said basic emergency measures were initiated while arrangements were made to take Patekar to hospital. A caretaker was also sent to arrange an ambulance.

By the time the emergency medical team arrived, Patekar had become unresponsive. Doctors began CPR at the residence before transporting him to Manipal Hospital.

He was brought to the hospital at approximately 4:20 am.

Doctors tried to revive actor

Medical staff continued resuscitation efforts after Patekar reached the hospital. Dr Salkar said cardiac massage and CPR were performed for around 45 minutes.

Despite the attempts, the actor could not be revived. He was declared dead at approximately 5:20 am.

Since Patekar was not a registered patient at the hospital, the case was treated as a medico-legal matter and police were informed.

His body was subsequently taken to Goa Medical College for a post-mortem examination.

Cause of death yet to be established

Dr Salkar said the hospital could not independently determine the exact cause of Patekar's death. The post-mortem examination and police inquiry are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the actor's death.

Patekar's death marks the end of a career spanning more than four decades across Hindi and Marathi cinema.

A celebrated career in Indian cinema

Patekar was widely regarded as one of Indian cinema's most accomplished performers. His filmography included acclaimed titles such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Ab Tak Chhappan, Welcome and Natsamrat.

Known for his intense performances and distinctive screen presence, he worked across mainstream and critically acclaimed cinema and remained an influential figure in both Hindi and Marathi films.
