Narendra Modi Resigns as PM, Expected to be Sworn in Again on June 8
Narendra Modi will be sworn in for a third term as Prime Minister following the NDA's narrow majority win, with preparations for government formation underway
05-06-2024Narendra Modi is poised to take the oath as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term on June 8, following the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing 292 seats, just above the majority mark, sources reveal.
President Droupadi Murmu has formally accepted Modi's resignation along with that of his Council of Ministers, while requesting that he continue in his role until the new government is established.
This historic win positions Modi to become the second leader in Indian history, after Jawaharlal Nehru, to serve three consecutive terms as Prime Minister.
Earlier in the day, Modi led a final meeting of the Union Cabinet at his residence to assess the Lok Sabha election results and discuss the formation of the next government. This meeting, which began at 11:30 am, was the last for the Modi 2.0 Cabinet and Council of Ministers.
In parallel, senior leaders of the NDA started arriving in Delhi for a critical meeting of the alliance scheduled for 4 pm, where they will discuss the details of government formation. Key figures such as JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu, who is set to become the next Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, are expected to attend.
According to sources, BJP's allies have already begun to submit their demands for positions in the upcoming Modi 3.0 Cabinet. The JD(U) has requested three Cabinet seats, while the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena seeks one Cabinet post and two Minister of State (MoS) positions.
Furthermore, the Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is anticipated to request one Cabinet and one state ministerial position. HAM(S) chief Jitam Ram Manjhi is also aiming for a Cabinet post in the new government, sources indicated.
