A recreational boat operated under Madhya Pradesh Tourism capsized on April 30 near Khamariya Island in the backwaters of the Narmada River after being caught in powerful winds and turbulent waves.
The vessel was reportedly carrying 29 visitors along with two crew members when gusts estimated at 60–70 kmph and rising water conditions caused it to overturn. Local residents were among the first to respond, soon joined by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and army divers.
Around 28 people were rescued during the intensive operation. However, nine lives were lost, including a woman and her child from Delhi. Search teams continue to comb the area as between four and six individuals are still unaccounted for.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Meanwhile, state authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine whether safety norms were compromised. Preliminary concerns include allegations of delayed distribution of life jackets and the decision to allow the boat to operate despite adverse weather alerts.
Actor Sonu Sood also reacted to the tragedy, urging authorities to enforce compulsory use of life jackets and suggesting the creation of a digital verification system to ensure vessels comply with safety checks before departure.
The incident has reignited debate over tourist safety protocols and emergency preparedness in river tourism across the state.
