NASA Extends Astronauts’ ISS Stay to March 2025 After Starliner Issues
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore's planned eight-day mission aboard the ISS has turned into an unexpected nine-month journey due to technical setbacks
19-12-2024In a surprising twist for space exploration, NASA has postponed the return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS) to late March 2025, extending what was initially an eight-day mission into an extraordinary nine-month odyssey.
The pair launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner on June 5, 2024, for what was intended as a brief test flight. However, technical issues, including thruster malfunctions and helium leaks, led to the Starliner’s uncrewed return in September, leaving the astronauts on the ISS for an extended stay.
NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission, originally planned for February 2025, has been delayed to no earlier than late March 2025 to allow additional time for processing a new Dragon spacecraft. Steve Stich, who leads NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, emphasized the importance of thorough spacecraft preparation to ensure safety.
The Crew-10 mission will feature NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA’s Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. They continue training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center while awaiting their revised launch schedule.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to astronaut safety, noting that the mission adjustments reflect NASA’s dedication to protecting its crew.
SpaceX has played a key role in this complex crew rotation, stepping in as Boeing works to resolve the Starliner’s challenges.
For Williams and Wilmore, their extended stay is a testament to astronaut resilience, transforming a short mission into a nine-month demonstration of endurance and adaptability in space exploration.Sunita Williams
