Nayanthara’s much-anticipated docuseries, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale, is set to premiere on Netflix on November 18. However, the project has hit a legal hurdle as actor-producer Dhanush has filed a ₹10 crore copyright claim against the producers. The dispute arises from a three-second clip from the Nayanthara-starrer Naanum Rowdy Dhaan—a film produced by Dhanush—that appears in the docuseries trailer.

In response to the legal notice, Nayanthara shared an open letter on Instagram, addressing Dhanush and expressing her dismay over the situation.

Nayanthara's Open Letter to Dhanush

In her letter, Nayanthara revealed that the team had already re-edited the docuseries due to Dhanush withholding a No Objection Certificate (NOC). She detailed the struggles faced over the past two years to gain his approval for using clips, songs, and even photographs from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Despite multiple requests, Dhanush had reportedly declined permission.

Nayanthara described the legal action as “an all-time low,” particularly since the disputed footage consists of behind-the-scenes visuals already available on social media. “Claiming ₹10 crore for three seconds of footage is shocking,” she wrote, adding, “This speaks volumes about your character.”

She also criticized the controlling nature of his actions, questioning, “Does a producer become an emperor, dictating the lives and freedoms of everyone on set?”

A Decade of Resentment

Nayanthara went on to recall past incidents that left her disillusioned. She claimed that Dhanush had made disparaging comments about Naanum Rowdy Dhaan even before its release. Despite the film’s blockbuster success and enduring popularity, she alleged that his displeasure over its acclaim was evident at industry events, including the 2016 Filmfare Awards.

The actress concluded her letter with “Om Namah Shivaya,” seemingly calling for peace amid the controversy.

About the Docuseries

Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale offers a behind-the-scenes look into the life of one of South India’s most celebrated actresses, showcasing her professional journey, personal struggles, and rise to stardom. The trailer, released earlier this month, promises an intimate exploration of her life and career, making it a must-watch for fans.

As the release date approaches, the copyright dispute has added unexpected drama to what promises to be an inspiring and revealing series.
