The Supreme Court of India today concluded proceedings against Karnataka High Court Judge Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, following his public apology for controversial remarks made during a court session. The five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, emphasized that the decision was taken to uphold the dignity of the judiciary.

The incident occurred during a landlord-tenant dispute in Bengaluru, where Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area as "Pakistan" and made a derogatory comment about a female lawyer. These remarks, which quickly gained attention on social media, led the Supreme Court to request a report from the Karnataka High Court.

In response, Chief Justice Chandrachud stated, "No part of India should be referred to as Pakistan. This undermines the territorial integrity of the nation." He further stressed that transparency, rather than suppression, is key to maintaining judicial accountability.

The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the issue and expressed concern over biased comments by judges, particularly those perceived as discriminatory towards specific communities or genders. In today’s hearing, CJI Chandrachud said, "Judges must exercise caution when making remarks, especially those that can be interpreted as patriarchal or biased."

The bench, which included Justices S Khanna, B R Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy, acknowledged the role of social media in amplifying courtroom proceedings and stressed the importance of maintaining judicial decorum. The court also highlighted the need for clear guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.
