India has not reported any cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus speculated to be driving an increase in infections in China, said Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, on Friday. Addressing unverified reports of a potential "outbreak" in China, Dr. Goel assured that there is no need for concern in the current situation.

"There is no evidence of HMPV infections in India," stated Dr. Goel, who also leads the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). "HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes cold-like symptoms. It primarily affects children and the elderly, who may experience flu-like symptoms, but the situation is manageable."

Dr. Goel emphasized the importance of following general precautions for respiratory illnesses, including avoiding close contact with others if you are coughing or sneezing, to minimize the risk of transmission. For mild symptoms, regular over-the-counter medications for colds and fevers are sufficient, he added.

The comments came in response to international media speculation about a rise in respiratory illnesses in China. While China has not confirmed any viral outbreak, a Reuters report earlier highlighted that Chinese authorities have increased surveillance for emerging respiratory diseases.

Dr. Goel noted that respiratory infections tend to surge during winter, which is a seasonal trend. "So far, there is no substantial data indicating a significant increase in respiratory outbreaks in China. Nonetheless, hospitals are always prepared with the required supplies and beds during this time of the year," he said.

The health official reiterated that the current scenario does not warrant alarm, urging people to remain calm and follow basic hygiene practices to stay healthy.
