Nobel Snub Again! Shehbaz Sharif Renews Push For Trump To Win Peace Prize After Navi Pillay’s Triumph

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has once again backed US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, renewing Islamabad’s campaign to credit him with helping bring an end to the India-Pakistan military confrontation in May 2025.

Sharif’s latest appeal came on Friday, October 9, even as the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay.

In a post on X, Sharif praised Trump’s role in promoting peace in South Asia. He claimed the US President’s intervention helped prevent a wider conflict between India and Pakistan and contributed to the ceasefire that ended their four-day military confrontation.

Sharif also expressed hope that Trump’s diplomatic efforts would receive international recognition, reiterating Pakistan’s earlier support for his Nobel candidature.

India, however, has consistently disputed Washington’s claims of mediation. New Delhi has maintained that the ceasefire understanding was reached directly between the two countries’ military officials, following a communication initiated by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations.

Pakistan Renews Support For Trump’s Nobel Bid

Islamabad first announced its decision to recommend Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on June 21, 2025, following the military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Pakistan credited the US President with helping de-escalate tensions and prevent further fighting. Trump has also repeatedly cited the ceasefire as an achievement of his diplomatic efforts.

India has rejected the suggestion that the United States brokered the agreement, maintaining that the two sides reached the understanding through direct military-level communication.

Sharif’s latest statement does not represent a new nomination. Instead, it renews Pakistan’s backing for Trump and its argument that his role in averting further conflict deserves recognition.

The campaign has continued as Trump has sought to establish his record as a global peacemaker, frequently highlighting his claimed role in resolving international conflicts. His administration, meanwhile, remains involved in the confrontation with Iran, including a naval blockade and preparations for possible further military action, according to the supplied report.

Trump Accepts Nobel Medal, But Cannot Become Laureate

Trump’s pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize has remained a recurring feature of his public statements and diplomatic engagements.

After Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, Trump accepted her medal when she presented it to him in January 2026. The gesture, however, did not transfer the award itself.

Nobel authorities have clarified that the medal can be given to another person, but the designation of Nobel laureate cannot be transferred. Machado remains the recipient of the prize.

The White House had criticised the Nobel Committee’s 2025 decision, accusing it of prioritising politics over peace.

Trump also expressed uncertainty about his prospects shortly before this year’s announcement, suggesting that the committee might not select someone like him.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee independently decides the winner. Public endorsements and nominations, including those made by foreign governments, do not guarantee that a candidate will receive the award.

Who Is 2026 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Navi Pillay?

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to 85-year-old Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African jurist born into a Tamil-origin family in Durban.

Pillay has held several prominent international legal positions. She served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and worked as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also chaired a UN commission investigating alleged violations in the Palestinian territories.

The Nobel Committee recognised her longstanding work in advancing international justice and the rule of law.

Pillay’s selection makes her the fifth South African national to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

While the 2026 award has gone to Pillay, Sharif has continued to make the case for Trump, maintaining Pakistan’s position that the US President’s involvement in the India-Pakistan ceasefire merits international recognition.
