Two recent incidents involving Kannada language sparked widespread backlash in Bengaluru, leaving playback singer Sonu Nigam and a State Bank of India official at the center of public ire. Both were caught on camera making statements that offended many Kannadigas, but the full context behind their words has largely been ignored.

During a concert in Bengaluru, Sonu Nigam uttered the phrase, “Kannada Kannada ... This is the reason what occurred in Pahalgam, happened,” while a bank official was heard saying, “I will not ... I will never speak Kannada,” during a dispute with a customer. These snippets went viral, triggering outrage over alleged insults to Kannada pride and calls for action against them.

A pro-Kannada group lodged a complaint against Nigam on May 2, accusing him of equating Kannada cultural identity with violence by linking a fan’s persistent song requests to a terror incident in Pahalgam. However, the comments made by both Nigam and the bank official were part of longer exchanges where the full situation reveals a different story.

Sonu Nigam Responded to Rude Behaviour

In Nigam’s case, he was responding to a single person in the audience who was repeatedly demanding songs in Kannada in a rude and threatening manner. A longer video shows Nigam explaining his frustration: “Whenever I come to Karnataka, I come with respect, because you have always treated us like family. But this one boy was so rudely threatening me, shouting ‘Kannada! Kannada!’ I’ve probably sung more Kannada songs than his age. This is why what happened in Pahalgam took place, because of actions like these.”

He continued to express affection for his Kannada fans and emphasized how, despite thousands of people in the crowd, he would sing Kannada songs for even one person demanding it, highlighting his respect for the language and culture. His remarks were made in the heat of the moment as a reaction to being heckled, not to insult Kannadigas.

SBI Official’s Kannada Refusal Occurred Amidst Heated Argument

The incident involving the SBI official happened during a confrontation with a customer complaining about long wait times. The customer insisted the staff speak Kannada, even though the official repeatedly explained she did not know the language. The exchange escalated as the customer refused to speak in any other language, and the official’s replies went from “I don’t know” to “I will not” and finally “I will never speak Kannada.”

The full video shows the tension and stubbornness on both sides — the frustrated customer demanding service in Kannada and the official unwilling or unable to comply. Her colleagues later tried to calm the situation and coached her to apologize in Kannada, which she did, expressing regret if anyone was hurt.

Missing Context and Fairness

Despite the availability of fuller videos and apologies, the brief clips that went viral captured only the most controversial phrases, missing the surrounding context and intent behind them. Both individuals were reacting to provocation: Nigam to rude heckling, and the bank official to a difficult customer confrontation.

In both cases, the other parties’ roles in escalating the situation were overlooked. The widespread condemnation and calls for punishment against Nigam and the SBI official ignored the basic principles of fairness that courts uphold — considering context, motive, and intent before judging guilt.

Here, both were presumed guilty in the court of public opinion before their side of the story was heard.
