Over 200 Academics Write to Priyanka Gandhi Over Remarks on IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti

A group of more than 200 academicians, including serving and former vice chancellors, has issued an open letter to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, objecting to her remarks about IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti during the Lok Sabha debate on the anti-paper leak legislation.

Signed by 215 members of the academic community, the letter expresses concern over Priyanka Gandhi's reported description of Kamakoti as a "gaumutra expert". The signatories argued that using such labels to target a scientist diminishes academic discourse and discourages meaningful public debate.

The letter states that disagreements over a scholar's views should be addressed through evidence and reasoned arguments rather than personal characterisations. It adds that reducing accomplished researchers to dismissive labels runs contrary to the spirit of scientific inquiry and constitutional values promoting scientific temper.

Academics Highlight Kamakoti's Scientific Contributions

The signatories also outlined Kamakoti's academic and professional achievements, noting that he heads one of India's leading engineering institutions and has earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras.

According to the letter, Kamakoti has authored more than 150 research papers, contributed to over 50 research and development projects and received several national honours, including the DRDO Academic Excellence Award and the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association's Techno Visionary Award.

The academics also credited him with playing a key role in the development of India's first industry-grade microprocessor, describing him as one of the country's leading technology experts.

Appeal for Respectful Academic Debate

The letter argues that the history of science demonstrates how ideas initially viewed with scepticism have later gained acceptance through evidence, while other long-held beliefs have eventually been disproved.

Against that backdrop, the signatories urged political leaders to challenge research and opinions through factual discussion rather than rhetoric. They warned that public remarks targeting scholars personally could discourage scientists and educators from participating in national conversations.

The group stressed that criticism should focus on evidence, methodology and arguments instead of questioning an individual's academic standing.

Remarks Made During Parliament Debate

Priyanka Gandhi made the comments while participating in the Lok Sabha discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Although she did not directly name V Kamakoti during her speech, her remarks were widely interpreted as referring to the IIT Madras Director, who is also a member of the Centre's newly constituted high-powered task force on examination reforms.

The controversy has since sparked debate over the boundaries of political criticism and the treatment of scientists and academic leaders in public discourse.
